How to Build Active Recall Into Your Study Sessions
The "Closed Notes" Method
After reading a section of your textbook or notes, close everything. Open a blank document and write everything you can remember. Then go back and check. The gaps you find are your real study targets — not the parts you already know.
Flashcard Retrieval (Not Just Reading)
Flashcards only work if you actively try to recall the answer before flipping the card. Apps like Anki force this by design. The algorithm also spaces your reviews — showing cards just as you're about to forget them — which combines active recall with spaced repetition for maximum retention.
Practice Questions First
Before re-reading your notes on a topic, attempt the past exam questions for that topic first. You'll learn more from struggling through questions you can't fully answer than from reading perfect notes.
